NMMC carries out intensive cleaning drive to combat air pollution.

The Campaign

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has started a vigorous cleaning program throughout the city in an attempt to lower air pollution. In the NMMC region, routine cleaning by Swachhta Mitras and Swachhta Sakhis has long been a mainstay; nevertheless, the growing buildup of dust and dirt along important roadways has called for a more forceful reaction.

Heavy traffic and huge trucks carrying construction and demolition materials have caused a major build-up of dirt on important roadways, including as the Sion-Panvel Highway, Thane-Belapur Marg, and Amra Marg, as well as inner city routes. The municipal authorities have taken action as a result of the accumulated soil being thrown into the air by moving vehicles, which has led to an increase in dust levels.

On December 30, 2024, the Deep Cleaning Drive got underway under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. In order to guarantee comprehensive cleaning in every region, the campaign placed a high priority on efficient execution, especially on Sundays and public holidays.

Neglected wastelands were also included in the effort. Mr. Sunil Pawar, an additional commissioner, oversaw the day-to-day activities and designated particular locations for cleaning within each department.

Modern fogging machines were utilized to spray water and clean the roadways, while teams worked to remove hardened dirt from sidewalks and roadside areas. These initiatives, which demonstrated a sustainable approach to urban cleaning, made use of processed and filtered water from NMMC’s sewage treatment centers.

Comprehensive cleaning operations were conducted on Sunday, January 12 in a number of locations, including the Digha Division’s MIDC area from Vodafone Corner to Sandoz Company, the Ghansoli Division’s Sector 11 Saibaba Circle to Bhagwat Road and Agri Chowk, and Koparkhairane’s Ghansoli Nalla to Dharan Lake Road. Other departmental office spaces were also the focus of the initiative.

Residents’ comments show a good effect, with many mentioning a reduction in dust in the air. In addition to improving the city’s cleanliness, the vigorous cleaning campaign has shown its value in reducing air pollution.
