Hyundai Aura Plunges into Tamhini Ghat Gorge, Pune Driver Killed

Published

In yet another tragic accident highlighting the dangers of the accident-prone Tamhini Ghat, a Hyundai Aura car plunged deep into a gorge, killing the driver on the spot. The incident occurred near Mangaon in Raigad district, barely a month after a fatal Mahindra Thar crash at the same location that claimed six lives.

According to police, the Hyundai Aura reportedly veered off the road and fell nearly 700 to 800 metres into the gorge. Due to the steep terrain and dense forest cover, locating the vehicle proved challenging. Rescue teams later used drones to trace the mangled car at the bottom of the gorge before retrieving the body.

The deceased has been identified as Shubham, a resident of Pune. He was found trapped inside the wreckage and was declared dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the car was registered with a tourist permit, raising the possibility that the driver was engaged in tourism-related work. However, the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Officials said that poor visibility, sharp turns, and lack of adequate safety measures could be contributing factors to repeated accidents on this stretch. Alarmingly, wreckage from the earlier Thar accident reportedly still remains near the site, underscoring the recurring risk for motorists.

The latest tragedy has once again sparked concerns over road safety in Tamhini Ghat, with locals and activists demanding urgent safety upgrades, including proper barricades, warning signage, and stricter monitoring to prevent further loss of lives on the hazardous route.
