Greens Express Concern Over The Illegal Excavation Of Parsik Hill In Belapur Despite The Risk Of Landslides
Green groups said that the bottom of the residential portion of the landslide-prone Parsik Hill in Belapur in Navi Mumbai is being dug up with heavy gear in a flagrant disregard for environmental regulations.
The NatConnect Foundation stated, “What is even more shocking is that this hill cutting is directly across the headquarters of City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra.” at his appeal to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, NatConnect director B N Kumar stated, “There are over a hundred buildings, including the Mayor’s bungalow, standing up on the hill and the Municipal and Police commissioners houses in the bottom, yet no one seems to care for the dangers to the hill.”
According to a study conducted by IIT-Bombay last year, the hill’s slopes are prone to landslides and are loose. Two years prior, the civic body’s water distribution control room was severely damaged by a landslide that originated from the hill. An X platform user named Amit Gupta shared a video of the hill being chopped on social media.
“The residents of Sec 26 on top of the hill may be in danger due to landslides caused by the school project’s relentless cutting of Parsik Hill in Sector 30/31 CBD Belapur,” Gupta stated.
Leader of the Shiv Sena (Shinde), former municipal commissioner Vijay Nahata, reposted the message with the tags CIDCO, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
Kharghar Hill and Wetlands activist Jyoti Nadkarni expressed her amazement that a school is engaging in such destructive behavior. “Is this how we’re going to teach our kids about the environment?” she said. Nahata, who oversaw the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), received Kumar’s plea and agreed to discuss the matter with Mantralaya.
NatConnect expressed shock that CIDCO permits development at the base of Parsik Hill and seemed to have learned nothing from the landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad and Irshalwadi districts of Raigad.
Amidst media reports last year regarding the destruction of the Parsik Hill slope and the consequent risk to the structures on top, the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) took an ad hoc note of the situation. The planner acknowledged that the private builder to whom the hill portion was leased had broken the terms of the lease after the Commission harshly reprimanded CIDCO. The arrangement had to be terminated by CIDCO.
