Forest Minister Orders CIDCO to Clear Debris from Lotus Lake or Face FIR
In a firm move to protect the environment, Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik has directed CIDCO to remove debris dumped in Lotus Lake, Sector 27, within a week or face legal action. The directive came during a Janata Darbar held on Thursday, following complaints from concerned citizens and environmental activists.
Despite CIDCO’s continued inaction regarding the debris allegedly dumped by its contractor into the ecologically sensitive lake, the minister took a strong stand. He instructed the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to issue a letter to CIDCO, warning of an FIR if the debris is not cleared within the stipulated time.
The issue was raised by a delegation led by former corporators Saluja Sutar and Netra Shirke. The group included activists and residents like Santosh Karkera, Prof. Sushil Shantaram Jadhav, Vinod Shah, Adv. Chandrakant Nikam, Niranjan Shankar, and Naresh Kalekar.
Speaking to the media, Karkera said, “The minister has asked us to attend the next Janata Darbar to inform him about the action taken. He also assured us of his commitment to protecting all wetlands across Navi Mumbai.”
This development is seen as a significant boost to citizen-led environmental efforts in the city, especially amid increasing threats to local wetlands due to unregulated construction and dumping. Environmentalists hope this directive sets a precedent for stricter accountability from planning agencies.
