Centre Seeks Urgent Action on Lotus Lake Burial in Navi Mumbai

The Centre has directed Maharashtra’s State Wetland Authority (SWA) to urgently act on the alleged burial of Lotus Lake in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, following complaints from environmentalists.

The Action

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has asked Maharashtra’s State Wetland Authority (SWA) to urgently address concerns regarding the alleged partial burial of Lotus Lake in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The move follows a grievance filed by the NatConnect Foundation through the Prime Minister’s Public Grievance portal.

In a letter signed by MoEFCC scientist Pankaj Verma, the Ministry acknowledged the efforts of NatConnect director B N Kumar in wetland conservation and directed the SWA to take immediate action and report findings.

Kumar highlighted that debris from the Navi Mumbai International Airport site, allegedly dumped by CIDCO contractor TIPL, has buried parts of the three-hectare lake. He pointed out that the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) had listed Lotus Lake as a wetland, contrary to CIDCO’s claim that the site is a residential plot.

CIDCO cited a report from Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC), stating the area lacks mangroves or mudflats. Kumar refuted this, noting the issue concerns a freshwater wetland.

Despite being man-made, Kumar stressed the lake’s ecological importance in flood control and biodiversity, warning against its destruction for real estate purposes. He compared the situation to Chennai, where wetland loss has worsened urban flooding.

MoEFCC has now officially transferred the grievance to SWA for urgent resolution under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, which ban dumping and encroachment in notified wetland zones.

The Fraud

The police have launched a manhunt to arrest a husband-and-wife cheating duo popularly dubbed a ‘Bunty-Babli’ couple for allegedly duping three local businessmen of Rs 1.45 crore under the guise of lucrative business deals and high-return investment schemes.

According to police sources, the accused couple lured the three victims into investing substantial amounts of money by promising guaranteed profits and exclusive business partnerships. Crackdown Targets Mule Account Holders and Facilitators Channeling Illicit Funds for Cyber Fraud Syndicates.

The Crack Down

In a significant move against organized digital fraud, the Navi Mumbai Police have launched an extensive crackdown on key enablers and facilitators powering cybercrime networks across the region.

The law enforcement initiative focuses on individuals who rent, sell, or operate “mule” bank accounts and fraudulent SIM cards. These intermediaries serve as crucial links for cyber syndicates, allowing fraudsters to process, layer, and divert millions of rupees stolen through various online scams—including investment fraud, illegal gaming apps, and phishing schemes.

Investigators revealed that these accounts are often opened using falsified documents or by offering small financial incentives to vulnerable individuals. Once created, the account credentials, passbooks, ATM cards, and linked SIM cards are handed over to criminal rings to rapidly transfer illicit funds before law enforcement can trace or freeze them.

Police officials warned that individuals permitting their bank accounts or identity documents to be used for illegal transactions will face severe criminal prosecution as co-conspirators under cybercrime laws. Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant, avoid sharing personal banking credentials, and immediately report suspicious financial activity or cyber fraud through the national helpline 1930.
