Case Filed Against Amit Thackeray, 40 MNS Workers for Unauthorized Statue Inauguration in Nerul
Police Book Leaders for Violating Orders, Obstructing Officials Amid Rising Pre-Election Activity.
The Inauguration
With civic elections nearing, political activity in Navi Mumbai has intensified. In a major development, the Nerul Police have registered a case against Amit Thackeray and 40 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for inaugurating a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj equestrian statue in Nerul without official permission.
The statue, located near the Rajiv Gandhi Flyover in Sector 1, Nerul, had been installed eight months ago but remained covered awaiting a formal inauguration by VIP dignitaries. MNS Juinagar division head Akshay Bhosale stated that repeated requests to the administration for an inauguration date were ignored. “It was wrapped in a dirty cloth for months. So under Amitji’s leadership, we inaugurated it,” he said.
On November 16, Amit Thackeray, who was in the city for party events, led a march of MNS workers to the site and conducted the inauguration. According to police, the gathering drew a large crowd and proceeded despite lacking lawful permission. When officers attempted to intervene, several workers allegedly pushed police personnel, obstructed their duties and damaged safety barricades installed by the NMMC around the statue.
Following the incident, police booked Amit Thackeray, city president Gajanan Kale, Nerul unit chief Abhijit Desai, office-bearer Savinay Mhatre, and multiple workers including Sachin Kadam, Akshay Bhosale and Nikhil Gawde, along with 40 unidentified participants. Charges include unlawful assembly, taking out an illegal procession, assaulting police, disobeying orders, and damaging public property. Responding to the case, Amit Thackeray said, “If this is the first case registered against me for such a cause, I welcome it.” Police have strengthened security and initiated a detailed investigation using CCTV footage and eyewitness statements.

Residents Raise Alarm Over Cigarette Sales to Students
Seawoods residents seek strict action against tobacco sales near educational institutions and public spaces.
The Cigarette Sales
Residents of Sector 25, Seawoods, Nerul, have raised concerns over students allegedly smoking in public places and the suspected sale of cigarettes to minors.
Following repeated complaints, the ward officer and local police conducted a raid at a paan shop on the ground floor of Ambika Heights on the night of September 11. Officials reportedly found cigarette cartons at the shop, but no other illegal intoxicating substances.
Residents said students, reportedly aged between 17 and 22, are frequently seen smoking near Seawoods railway station, the bridge and other public areas. They suspect that a local paan shop may be supplying cigarettes to college students. Prakash Yawalkar, president of the Seawoods Citizens Welfare Association, said students were openly smoking outside the shop, raising concerns among residents and parents.
The association has submitted complaints to the local police, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, mayor, local representatives and the Drug Department. It has urged authorities to strictly enforce the law prohibiting tobacco sales to minors and increase monitoring around schools, colleges and other student gathering points.
Residents said stronger action is needed to prevent tobacco use among young people and ensure that public spaces remain safe and healthy.
