APMC Seizes 200 Containers of Tur Dal Worth ₹34.6 Crore in Major Crackdown

In a major crackdown, the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) vigilance team has seized 200 containers of imported tur dal worth Rs 34.6 crore for bypassing APMC regulations. The operation, one of the largest in APMC’s history, culminated in a record fine of Rs 1.11 crore levied on the Mumbai-based importer, Namha Imports.

The seizure took place on the night of May 29 during a special surveillance drive across JNPA, Turbhe, Nerul, and the Thane-Belapur Road. Officials intercepted a container trailer at Vahal junction in Uran and found it was transporting tur dal. Documents revealed the consignment, totaling 5,010 tonnes, had been exported by Agglo Commodities FZE, Dubai.

APMC officials found no record of the consignment in their system, indicating that the importer had neither sought permission nor paid mandatory market fees and supervision charges. All 200 containers were later traced to a godown and seized.

“It is mandatory to inform the APMC and pay the required charges for any agricultural produce business within our jurisdiction,” said APMC Secretary P.L. Khandagale. “The importer’s failure to comply confirms the intention to evade dues. We are recovering Rs 1,11,48,000 in fines and other charges.”

Under the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1963, evading cess and fees can attract penalties up to three times the applicable charges. In the past two months alone, APMC has collected Rs 30 lakh in similar enforcement actions.

Steady monsoon downpours boost primary water reservoir for Navi Mumbai residents.

The Storage

In a major relief for Navi Mumbai residents, water levels at the Morbe Dam the primary drinking water source for the region have reached 75.66% of its total capacity, following consistent monsoon showers across its catchment area in Khalapur.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) officials confirmed that the rising water levels significantly reduce concerns over potential water cuts or supply disruptions in the coming months. The steady inflow has ensured a secure drinking water buffer for over 15 lakh residents across the city.

While the current stock is sufficient to meet daily demand well into early next year, civic engineers noted that sustained heavy downpours are still required for the reservoir to hit 100% capacity and overflow. NMMC continues to monitor catchment rainfall closely to optimize seasonal storage reserves.

In a strong bid to enforce urban planning norms and safeguard public land, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its crackdown on illegal structures across several ward offices. Following directives from the Bombay High Court regarding unauthorized developments, NMMC officials have taken strict action against hundreds of illegal structures. Show-cause notices have also been served to civic personnel under whose jurisdiction these unsanctioned developments reportedly flourished.

Armed with heavy machinery, anti-encroachment squads are pulling down illegal reinforced concrete (RCC) structures, unauthorized hutments, and encroached spaces built without required planning permissions or in violation of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act.

NMMC administrators have instructed ward officers to maintain strict monitoring, conduct regular site inspections, and initiate immediate punitive action against fresh encroachments to preserve the planned character of Navi Mumbai.
