Following right-wing protests, a school in Vashi revokes expulsion

After protests from the MNS student wing and other right-wing organisations, six Class 10 students who had been expelled by their school in Vashi for misbehaviour were allowed to return. At St. Lawrence High School on June 12, the event involving the pupils happened during a break. Following the SSC board kids’ rustication by the headmistress, their parents addressed MNVS (Vidyarthi Sena of MNS) office holders. On Wednesday morning, the activists organised a demonstration in front of the school’s entrance. MNVS alleged that the students were dismissed for yelling religious anthems. The campaigners were barred by police from accessing the school. Meanwhile, two more groups and local BJP members proceeded to visit the headmistress.

A letter asking the headmistress of a Vashi school to overturn the rustication of six 10th-grade students was filed by BJP office bearer Vijay Walunj and a number of party volunteers, as well as representatives of the Sakal Hindu Samaj and Shree Shivpratisththan Hindustan. The headmistress denied that the pupils had been disciplined even though they had been expelled for misbehaviour. The headmistress disputed that the pupils were expelled for yelling “Jai Shri Ram,” as claimed by MNVS secretary Sachin Kadam. The pupils were discovered making a scene while in class, and there is no CCTV evidence of them yelling out religious chants.

The headmistress reassured worried children that their academic future would not be destroyed and that they would be permitted to attend school regularly, according to Yogesh Shete, the deputy president of MNVS for Navi Mumbai. The kids were penalised for failing to maintain decorum rather than expelled for chanting religious slogans, according to Walunj, the headmistress’s assistant. Walunj also forewarned the school administration that if the children were treated unfairly, nearby residents would participate in a protest march.
