On November 24, a team of Meghalayan ministers led by the state’s chief minister Conrad K. Sangma will meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to demand a CBI or NIA investigation into the clashes that left six persons dead along the state’s border with Assam.

However, the Assam government said on Tuesday that it will turn the inquiry into the violence that occurred in the West Karbi Anglong district along its contentious border with Meghalaya over to a centralised or impartial institution.

After a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Sangma declared, “We will formally notify him (Shah) about the firing event that occurred in Mukroh village and demand that an investigation be undertaken by a federal agency, either NIA or CBI.”

A special investigation team (SIT) led by the DIG of Eastern Range has been formed to look into the event, according to him. He further stated that “the same would be handed over to a central agency once authorised by the Centre.”

On November 24, a team from the cabinet would meet with the union home minister, he added.

Sangma added that the group will meet with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi and present a report on the occurrence so that appropriate action could be taken.

When the Centre agrees of our plan, the inquiry will be turned over to a central agency, he continued. “The SIT will begin conducting the probe,” he said.

Sangma added that his administration also made the decision to establish a judicial commission under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, to investigate every facet of the incident that occurred on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the chief minister will travel to Mukroh village, the scene of the conflict, with the assistance of the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, the PHE minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and the minister for revenue and disaster management Kyrmen Shylla.

Sagma stated, “We will meet the families of those who have died and hand over the ex gratia cheques to them during our visit to Mukroh.

The CM claimed that he discussed the incident with the Assam chief minister over the phone. He has requested that those responsible for the shooting in Mukroh village face swift punishment. In remembrance of the departed, the state government has postponed all government initiatives until November 30.
