Residents in Panvel complain of health difficulties due to garbage burning
A chartered accountant from New Panvel, 50, has complained frequently over the last year about piles of trash gathered from homes being dumped and burned close to residential areas in Palaspe along the Panvel-Matheran road. The burning of waste pollutes the air and endangers the health of the populace, particularly the elderly and young. However, the Palaspe gram panchayat has not addressed the complaints and has remained indifferent to the problem of environmental harm.
The Palaspe Gram panchayat is accused of engaging in what appears to be a well-planned scheme to reduce the cost of carrying rubbish to the approved disposal site. Vogety Parshuram, the complaint, stated that burning rubbish generates very dangerous vapours since it contains hazardous waste such as plastic, foam, and thermocol. Long-term exposure to these gases can result in irreversible damage to the eyes, lungs, liver, immune system, neurological system, and cause headaches, nausea, and rashes. The worst impacted are primarily children.
The Palaspe grampanchayat appears least interested in cleaning the main road, internal roads, and other frequently utilised locations where the careless public irresponsibly dumps waste. “There are three significant apartment complexes in this neighbourhood, including Arihant Aspire, Sai World City, and Marathon Nexzone, which together contain more than 5000 flats,” he continued. However, the developers of these complexes have not bothered to follow up with the grampanchayat regarding improper cleaning or burning of garbage, aside from selling the flats citing heaven and the international airport.
Palaspe gram panchayat’s Sarpanch, Chandrakant Bhoir, stated: “The fenced dumping field next to the Palaspe bridge is where the daily trash collected from homes in the Palaspe grampanchayat area is deposited. Once a truckload of waste has gathered, the contractor chosen by the Palspe grampanchayat carries it to the Taloja MIDC dump site for properly disposing of it. However, some miscreants from nearby villages, ragpickers, and hotels are disposing of their trash outside the guarded disposal area and subsequently burning it.”
