West Bengal: BJP wins Naxalbari where the Maoist movement began
The Trinamool Congress has registered victory in West Bengal. That is the single biggest story of the election results across five different states that were declared today. In individual battles, the biggest story is Nandigram where Suvendu Adhikari defeated ‘Didi’ by a narrow difference. But there is one other constituency that encapsulates the political shift that West Bengal has undergone. We are, of course, talking about Naxalbari.
In Naxalbari, which gave rise to the Maoist movement, the BJP has won easily. The Left Front’s ally, ironically, the Congress itself, has come at 3rd position after the TMC at the second place.
Anandamay Burman, the BJP’s candidate from the constituency, had over 58% vote-share as of the time of writing this report. TMC’s Rajen Sundas had only 28.65% of the votes, the difference in votes over 70,000. INC’s Sankar Malakar, part of the Left Front, secured only 9.58% of the votes.

NMMC Urges Citizens For A Clean, Green, And Plastic-Free Diwali Celebration
NMMC appeals for a clean and eco-friendly Diwali.
The Appeal
With Diwali around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has called on residents to celebrate in an environmentally friendly and plastic-free manner. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde urged citizens to promote cleanliness and reduce pollution, highlighting the importance of an eco-conscious Diwali.
To facilitate responsible waste disposal, the NMMC has set up ‘3 R’ centers at 92 locations where residents can donate discarded items, fostering the festival’s spirit of giving. A deep-cleaning campaign is underway, with mechanical sweepers and treated water from sewage plants deployed to clean major roads and conserve drinking water. Areas like Nerul and Belapur have already benefited from the cleanup, with residents noting reduced dust and pollution.
In an effort to curb pollution, the NMMC reminded citizens to avoid firecrackers, as studies indicate an AQI rise during Diwali. Firecrackers exceeding 125 decibels or containing hazardous chemicals remain illegal, and residents should limit firecracker use between 7 PM and 10 PM, following the Bombay High Court’s order. Dr. Shinde encouraged eco-friendly decorations, promoting the slogan, “Cleanliness is Lakshmi,” emphasizing cleanliness as an integral part of the festive season.
