Shipbuilding Pilot Project Worth Rs 100 Crore Will Be Launched By JNPA

Published

on

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is gearing up for a ground-breaking solar-powered pilot project, hoping to lower the growing use of gasoline and diesel by offering solar electricity to ships berthed at the port. JNPA would invest about Rs. 100 crore in this project, which is expected to be the first of its sort in Indian ports.

It is anticipated that the pilot project would reduce fuel expenditures dramatically and lessen air pollution. According to JNPA President Unmesh Wagh, Turtas APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India Limited are partners in this project.

The port of JNPA has six private terminals that can accommodate thirty cargo ships at once and carry between 12,000 and 15,000 containers per. In order to load and unload cargo, these ships frequently spend a lot of time at the dock.

Ships need base load energy throughout their visit to support necessities like hoteling, unloading, and loading. A significant amount of electricity is needed for this.

Two to three high-capacity HT and LT generators, with capacities ranging from 1,000 to 25,000 KVA, are utilized, depending on the size of the ship, to supply this need. Over the course of 24 to 48 hours or longer, these generators use six to nine tons of fuel (6,000 to 9,000 liters). For these two days, the cost of fuel varies from Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 9 lakh. In addition to raising expenses, the significant fuel usage also increases air pollution.

The experimental initiative intends to address the growing concerns about air quality and rising gasoline prices. The Chief Manager of JNPA’s M&EE Department, Nitin Borwankar, said that these pilot programs are uncommon worldwide because of their high expenses.
