APMC Vashi’s Ignorance of Fire Safety Threatens the Market

Published

on

A thorough investigation reveals that the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, continues to take critical preventative action, which is contributing to alarming fire safety violations. Concerns over the market’s and its stakeholders’ safety have been raised by the frequent fire accidents. A report that suggested preventive actions was sent to the Board of Directors in September. Sadly, no significant steps have been done in the intervening period, which leaves the market’s fire safety precautions unclear and exposes it to possible threats.

A specialist committee was established to develop preventative tactics for five markets in the wake of the terrible fire catastrophe that occurred at the APMC fruit market in November of last year. Unsettling oversights, such as the careless storing of combustible items, disorganized car parking, and insufficient fire safety procedures during the loading and unloading of cargo, have been discovered during recent inspections. In the APMC market, the inspection report also revealed unpermitted additions, encroachments, improper use of space, and unpermitted changes, all of which increased the risk of accidents.

The implementation of critical fire safety measures has been hampered by the Board of Directors’ delay, despite the report’s specific recommendations. The safety of the market now appears to be dependent on chance, raising concerns about the administration’s ability to control the pandemonium and punish individuals accountable for the found shortcomings. The APMC executive engineer, Suresh Mohade, has not responded to requests for clarity, which has increased worries about the lack of openness and haste in addressing the pressing matter.

The Maharashtra Preventive and Life Protective Measures Acts of 2006 and 2009 mandated strict adherence to fire safety regulations. The report has outlined immediate measures for fire safety, emphasizing the installation of fire extinguisher systems at regular intervals, proper water tank arrangements, installation of fire-fighting pumps, and other measures.
