Fearing Violations, Residents Voice Concerns As NMIAL Seeks Building Height Details

Published

on

Concerns have emerged in Navi Mumbai regarding a letter from Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt Limited (NMIAL) requesting detailed information on building heights within a 20-kilometer radius of the airfield. This request, grounded in a Ministry of Civil Aviation notification, followed NMIAL’s discovery of height regulation violations during a 2023 aeronautical survey. Despite this, NMIAL officials have not responded to inquiries about the letter’s intent.

For instance, in the case of Nivaan Grande at New Seawoods, Nerul, NMIAL’s request included specifics such as the building’s maximum height, construction dates, approved plans, occupancy certificate, World Geodetic System 1984 coordinates, and the Airports Authority of India’s no objection certificate.

Activist B N Kumar, convenor of the Alert Citizens Team, has criticized NMIAL for creating unnecessary conflict among residents and questioned why NMIAL is directly contacting them rather than coordinating with NMMC and CIDCO, which issued the occupancy certificates. Kumar noted that CIDCO had previously celebrated relocating the Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) from DPS school to Dhakale Island, which was intended to lift height restrictions and facilitate taller buildings.

Former NMMC Standing Committee chairwoman Netra Shirke has also raised the issue with MLA Ganesh Naik and the civic body, arguing that NMIAL should verify building documents with NMMC instead of burdening residents, as these buildings predate the airport project. Naik has pledged to address the matter with NMIAL.
