Fishermen’s Request For Compensation For Livelihood Loss Owing To Atal Setu Will Be Heard By Bombay High Court
A fishing community called the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Atal Setu, or Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), has filed a claim for compensation with the Bombay High Court, saying it has sustained damages as a result of the project’s construction and operation. Many thousands of fisherman rely on the Thane Creek for their livelihood, and it is alleged that this has been negatively impacted by the 21.8 kilometre MTHL that connects Mumbai to Navi Mumbai.
In its plea, Mari Aai Machimar Sahkari Sanstha Maryadit, a society that represents 1,210 Koli people from seven traditional fishing villages in Navi Mumbai, claims that since MTHL’s construction started in 2018, the fish stock in the creek has significantly decreased by nearly 60%. Vashigaon, Juhugaon, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, Gothivali, Diva, and Belapur are among the villages impacted.
The Kolis have been left out of compensation plans intended to lessen the project’s negative consequences, despite studies emphasizing its implications on the fishing community. It outlines a number of surveys that the Fisheries Department carried out to evaluate the effects of MTHL in fishing villages.
According to a third survey report from February 2021, fish productivity was declining. The fishing season of 2018–19 only managed to record 46% of the levels of productivity observed in 2017–18. In the 2019–20 season, it fell by an additional 60%.
The request also states that the Fisheries Department and other experts have concluded that there has been a decline in fish stock as a result of changes in turbidity levels and tidal currents, which has negatively impacted the livelihood of traditional fishermen.
Furthermore, although acknowledging that compensation is due, the authorities have not given it. It further stated that the customary easement rights of the fishing community and the basic rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution are being infringed.
