A highway side was transformed into a mini jungle by Kharghar residents.

The Transformation

Residents of Kharghar Sector 7 have worked tirelessly to transform a once-waste-filled area beside the Sion Panvel Highway into a flourishing green area. With the help of the community, what used to be an empty area next to the highway has been turned into a lush haven.

After being a barren place with random trash, the area is now a lush “mini jungle” that is abundant in oxygen and teaming with life. In an effort to restore the area for nature, locals have been actively participating in planting and caring for trees since 2012.

Every family decided to pitch in and plant a minimum of two seedlings, depending on their preferences. The land is currently covered in a wide variety of natural and non-native trees, such as mango, jamun, pipal, banyan, palm, and bamboo. Residents persisted in spite of the difficulties brought on by the lack of assistance from the government, depending on their own resources and rainfall to keep the vegetation alive.

A well-known participant in the city’s plantation initiatives, offered assistance by planting native trees and giving the locals insightful advice. She outlined the many advantages of green space, including how it lowers temperatures, absorbs carbon emissions, reduces noise pollution, and promotes biodiversity.

Even with occasional adversities like trash left by mischievous people, the trees continue to stand as evidence of the community’s resiliency. In addition to offering people a much-needed break, they also provide as a crucial connection to the highway bus stop.

She emphasized the transformational potential of tree planting in reducing environmental concerns and urged other communities to emulate this model of group action. She listed the many benefits of planting trees along the side of the road, such as the ability to block noise, lower temperatures, absorb pollution, and preserve soil through companion planting.
