On Wednesday, Avtar Saini, a well-known chip designer, was murdered by a taxi on Palm Beach Road in Nerul while out on a ride with several bikers. Former head of Intel India, Saini, 68, is recognized for his contributions to the development of the Intel 386 and Intel 486 microprocessors. He later took the lead in creating the Pentium processor’s architecture. Less than a year has passed since runner Rajalakshmi Vijay died on the Worli sea face, and this tragedy serves as yet another reminder of how dangerous Mumbai’s roadways are for runners, bikers, and pedestrians.

At 5:50 in the morning, Saini, a Chembur resident, was struck by a car between the Nerul intersection and the NRISeawoods signal. After being transferred to D Y Patil Hospital, he was pronounced dead. He was accompanied by a group of amateur cyclists, and they said that when the cab struck Saini’s bike from behind, he skidded on the road and suffered serious injuries.

The cab’s front wheels squeezed the bicycle frame under them due to the force of the accident. The rider tried to flee by pulling the bicycle beneath his wheels for a distance of one kilometre. The vehicle was pursued and detained by oncoming drivers close to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation offices in Belapur. Inspector Satish Kadam of the NRI Coastal Police stated: “Hrishikesh Khade, the taxi driver in question, has been charged with reckless and careless driving resulting in death. He has not been placed under arrest; instead, he has received a notice under the CrPC instructing him to assist with the investigation and to appear in court upon the filing of a charge sheet.

A autopsy has been ordered for Saini’s body. Saini was an active member of the Chembur Amateur Cycling group for ten years, according to group member Anwar Sayyed. Another member, Praveen Prakash, stated that Saini’s wife passed away three years prior. His son and daughter, who reside in the United States, survive him. “At Intel, we are saddened by the demise of former country manager & director Intel South Asia, Avtar Saini,” said Gokul V. Subramaniam, president of Intel India, on social media. The establishment of the Intel R&D facility in India was greatly aided by Avtar.

From 1982 until 2004, he had a distinguished career at Intel, where he contributed to the creation of many CPUs.” Anand Parthasarathy, an IndiaTechOnline editor and technology commentator, told sources that Saini’s contribution to the Pentium processor’s development was essential to the chip’s prompt commercial release. Saini and Vinod Dham and Rajeev Chandrasekhar made up a special trio of Indians who worked on Pentium.”
