In response to complaints about the roadways, NMMC begins patching potholes

Published

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun the pothole-filling operation after heavy rains in July exposed the subpar road repair work done by the municipal body throughout the summer as part of pre-monsoon preparation. Rajesh Narvekar, commissioner of NMMC, ordered the civic engineering department to expedite pothole filling work after inspecting the city roads in response to complaints on the civic body’s grievance redress portal. This is so that residents won’t be further inconvenienced given that the festival season is quickly approaching. Civic leaders have acknowledged that potholes had appeared on several roads and blamed the problem on the 1,000 mm or more of rain that fell in the final two weeks of July.

During the dry time, the executive engineers of the relevant locations have been told to begin patching potholes as soon as possible. The city engineer Sanjay Desai has been appointed to monitor the work on a daily basis, according to an official. “The executive engineers of all the sections are working in their respective areas,” the source added. Civic authorities were only offering excuses under the guise of heavy rain in order to keep the road free of potholes, and now that the rain has stopped, they are in a difficult position to carry out their duties genuinely, according to activist Mangesh Mhatre.

All asphalt patches have developed potholes, although drivers assert that cement concrete portions have offered some respite. According to a yearly maintenance contract, up to eight contractors have been given the go-ahead to do the repair work in each of the eight nodes throughout the nodal side. While two other contractors are addressing trouble spots along the MIDC corridor. “It is the responsibility of the contractors to maintain the roads in their assigned regions and address trouble locations as needed. Failure to do so should result in punishment. According to a resident, Mukand Karanjkar, this is not the case and the locals are forced to carry the burden of the difficult roads.
