Sanpada Residents Express Concern Over The City’s Low Air Quality Index
Residents raise alarm over poor air quality index in Sanpada.
The Air Quality
Residents of Sanpada, Navi Mumbai, especially those in sectors 13 to 19, woke up to a thick, foul-smelling mist on Thursday morning, suspected to be caused by burning waste. The toxic haze has raised serious health concerns as it has lingered over the past few days.
Photographs taken in the early hours showed deserted streets covered in smog, creating a gloomy and hazardous atmosphere. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 304 at 6:00 a.m., placing it in the “very poor” category, which can cause respiratory issues with prolonged exposure. By 5:00 p.m., the AQI improved to 168 but remained a concern for those with lung or heart conditions.
Local resident Maria Kaur took to social media, tagging the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and officials like Dashrath Bhagat and Vijay Nahata, demanding urgent action. She described the air as “toxic” and “stinky,” highlighting the severity of the pollution.
Nilesh Gore, another resident, urged authorities and environmental groups to investigate the source and take immediate action. “Continuous exposure to such hazardous air is particularly dangerous for the elderly and children,” he warned.
Residents are now calling for strict measures to curb pollution and prevent further deterioration of air quality in the area.

There Will Be A CGHS Wellness Center In Thane
In a significant move for over 1 lakh central government employees and retirees, a CGHS Wellness Centre will soon be established at Charai, Thane. This long-pending demand of the CGHS Beneficiaries Association, Thane, has been fulfilled through the efforts of MP Naresh Mhaske, who secured central approval for the facility.
The centre will be located on a 3,000 sq. ft. site at MTNL Charai, with the central government approving the annual rent for the premises. It will provide free healthcare services to employees from departments like Customs, Income Tax, Navy, BSNL, MTNL, Air India, and others, along with their families and pensioners.
Despite multiple rejections in the past, the proposal gained momentum after MP Mhaske’s intervention. Following site inspections by MTNL, CGHS officials, and association representatives, the Union Health Ministry approved the proposal within two months. MP Mhaske personally followed up with Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav to expedite the process.
“This wellness centre is a major step in providing free healthcare benefits under the Government Health and Welfare Scheme,” said MP Naresh Mhaske. The centre will cater to employees, pensioners, and eligible family members, including spouses, dependent parents, children up to 25 years, and unmarried daughters.

At Nerul, NMMC Launched A Chemotherapy Daycare Center
Navi Mumbai’s First Chemotherapy Treatment Administered at NMMC Cancer Day Care Centre.
The Centre
In a major step for cancer care in Navi Mumbai, the first chemotherapy treatment was successfully administered at the newly opened Cancer Day Care Centre at Maasaheb Meenatai Thackeray Hospital, Nerul. The facility, launched under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), aims to provide accessible and convenient cancer treatment for local residents.
Previously, patients had to travel long distances to private hospitals or Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, facing long waiting times and financial strain. To address this, NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde initiated the formation of a local chemotherapy unit.
In collaboration with Tata ACTREC, NMMC has established a 10-bed Day Care Chemotherapy Unit, allowing patients to receive treatment without prolonged hospital stays. The centre officially commenced services on January 17, with the first chemotherapy dose successfully administered under the supervision of medical teams from NMMC and Tata ACTREC.
The centre operates from 8:00 AM and is staffed by trained doctors, nurses, and specialists. Initially, treatment will be provided to patients with solid tumours, with the first dose given at Tata ACTREC and subsequent doses administered locally if the patient’s condition allows.
Dr. Shinde emphasized that this facility will reduce travel burdens, improve accessibility, and enhance the overall experience for cancer patients in Navi Mumbai. The initiative marks a significant milestone in the city’s healthcare services.
