The state medical council is being targeted by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation

Published

The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), the body that regulates the medical industry, was requested in a letter from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Tuesday to take further action against the NeuroGen Brain & Spine Institute in Seawoods for commercially treating autistic children with stem cell therapy. The hospital’s registration had been cancelled by the NMMC last week. It submitted a caveat to the Bombay high court on Tuesday in an effort to be heard regarding a potential NeuroGen appeal. According to Dr. Pramod Patil, a medical health officer at NMMC, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) standards only allow for clinical studies of stem cell therapy.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved that no one is permitted to employ stem cell therapy for medical purposes. “Stem cells may be produced from the bone marrow, peripheral blood cells, or foetal blood, among other sources, but such procedures must strictly be approved by the ethical committee of NMC.” Dr. Patil responded to NeuroGen owner Dr. Alok Sharma’s claim that the NMMC failed to provide them notice by saying that the hospital received a month’s notice on December 29, 2022. According to section 8 (1) of the Bombay Nursing Home Act, their registration was only terminated as a result of noncompliance.

Dr. Uma Ladiwala, a stem cell researcher who was formerly affiliated with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, stated: “The health ministry notified stem cell-derived products as a new medication in March 2019. On the basis of procedural complexity, it has previously separated stem cells and their derivatives into two categories: “substantially” and “minimally” altered. However, the establishment of the “minimally manipulated” group, which contains injections provided by NeuroGen, had raised objections from ICMR. According to a recent study, injecting stem cells into the spinal cord induced seizures in 9% of the patients, according to Dr. Ladiwala.
