According to sources, the Rabale’s  Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) police in Navi Mumbai have detained a tempo driver and recovered 51 lakh rupees worth of illegal gutka.

The police claim that the illegal substance was being shipped to Khopoli in Maharashtra under the pretence of shipping garlic.

A team of Rabale MIDC police discovered a suspicious tempo that was being escorted by a Wagon-R vehicle with four occupants in the early hours of Saturday while on patrol, according to authorities.

Police claim that when they ordered the tempo driver to halt, the individuals in the vehicle allegedly fled, raising suspicion. When they checked, they found gutka-containing sacks being transported in the same containers as garlic.

At the service road in front of Success Lodge in Mahape MIDC, we intercepted the tempo. In the sacks beneath the garlic, the pan masala gutka was concealed, according to senior police inspector Sudhir Patil of the Rabale MIDC police station.

Additional investigations showed that Shaukat, a resident of Vadodara in Gujarat, was responsible for providing the goods, according to Vivek Pansare, deputy commissioner of police for Zone I. “The tempo was driven by a Gujarati man and carried a Gujarati licence plate. To find a secure route to Khopoli, the vehicle was escorting the tempo, he said.

We are currently searching for the primary supplier from Gujarat as well as the four men who were in the car accompanying the tempo, including the man from Khopoli who was supposed to accept the shipment, Pansare said.

Sagar Kamlesh Gohel, the 31-year-old tempo driver who was detained, was brought in court and ordered to remain in police prison until December 15.

The Food and Safety Act (FDA) and other parts of the Indian Penal Code were utilised to charge Gohel and other wanted suspects. Police said they are continuing their investigation.
