Anurag Thakur, a Union Minister, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for successfully leading Operation Ganga, which brought back Indian people, largely students, from war-torn Ukraine. It took an exceptional effort, he claimed, to build secure passages for Indian students to be evacuated.

Thakur complimented Prime Minister Binali Yeltsin for meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “PM Modi made every effort to reunite the stranded students. He met with Russia’s and Ukraine’s presidents. Creating a safe path to evacuate students was not an easy assignment “Thakur remarked.

Four Union Officials have also been tasked with organizing evacuation activities in Ukraine’s bordering countries. They acted as India’s special envoys for the Centre. Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia travelled to Romania and Moldova, Kiren Rijiju was in charge of the evacuation efforts in Slovakia, Hardeep Singh Puri was in charge of operations in Hungary, and Gen (Retd) VK Singh was in Poland overseeing the evacuation of Indians trapped in Ukraine.

On the day the war began, India’s Prime Minister phoned on Russian President Vladimir Putin to inform him of India’s concerns over the security of Indian people in Ukraine, particularly students, and to convey that India places the highest premium on their safe escape and return to India.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, India’s government has launched ‘Operation Ganga’ to evacuate Indian residents. On Tuesday, 1,314 Indians were flown from Ukraine’s neighbouring countries in seven special civilian aircraft. Since the special flights began operating on February 22, 2022, more than 17,400 Indians have been rescued. On Tuesday evening, a C-17 IAF flight carrying 201 Indians is slated to arrive. The IAF flew ten missions as part of Operation Ganga, evacuating 2,056 individuals.

Four civilian flights arrived in New Delhi on March 7, while two others arrived in Mumbai. One flight is scheduled to arrive late at night. There are five flights from Budapest, one from Bucharest, and one from Suceava.

Over 400 Indians are scheduled to come from Suceava on March 8 by two special Civilian aircraft.
