Rajasthan Congress to BJP MLAs: Return Flats and IPads

Published

on

Congress stated on Thursday that the saffron party MPs should return all such things obtained by them until now, a day after the opposition BJP declared that its MLAs will return iPhones gifted to them by the Rajasthan government.

Following the introduction of the state budget on Wednesday, the administration presented each of the 200 MLAs in Rajasthan with an iPhone 13. The BJP MLAs received the phones as well but later decided to return them, claiming that they were a financial burden on the state.

“Giving mobile phones as a present is not a big issue,” deputy chief whip Mahendra Chaudhary told reporters. “However, if they (BJP MLAs) have decided to return the phones, they should also return the flats and iPads that they received previously.”

MLA Krishna Poonia of Congress questioned why the BJP legislators suddenly see the “gift” as a financial burden when they previously accepted such items.

“They (BJP MLAs) were happy to accept phones yesterday, but they opted to come back later.” They should not have received the gift in the first place (on Wednesday itself). They’re causing a problem since they couldn’t criticize the budget,” she explained.

Satish Poonia, the BJP’s state president, said the decision to return the phones was reached following discussions with Gulab Chand Kataria, the opposition’s leader, and Rajendra Rathore, the opposition’s deputy leader.

He stated, “The phones will be returned.”

“We (MLAs) would return the gift by the party’s decision,” stated BJP state spokesperson and MLA Ram Lal Sharma.

In the 200-member House of Commons, the BJP has 71 MLAs.

All MLAs were given a suitcase containing an iPhone 13 after the chief minister delivered the budget and the parliament was adjourned for the day.

Over Rs 70,000 is spent on a single phone.

The state general secretary of the Youth Congress, Ayush Bhardwaj, accused the BJP of adopting double standards and said it was making a controversy since it was unable to speak out against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s budget presentation in the legislature on Wednesday.
