Seven storey building collapses in Shimla due to landslide

Published

A seven-storey building collapsed in Shimla on Thursday evening due to a landslide triggered by recent rains, a senior official said.  The State Disaster Management Director Sudesh Kumar Mokhta said that the incident took place at Ghoda Chowki near Hali Palace in Shimla at around 5.45 pm.

No casualties have been reported in the incident so far, he said. Further details are awaited. “A multi-storey building collapsed at Kachi Ghati area of Himachal Pradesh`s Shimla district on Thursday evening due to a landslide triggered by recent rains, no loss of life was reported. A probe has been ordered by the government to look into the incident,” said state urban development minister Suresh Bhardwaj.

Parts of the structure hit two two-storey buildings, damaging them, he said, adding two adjoining buildings, including a hotel, were also at risk.

It appears that incessant heavy rains and landslides in the region had loosened the soil under the building, which was raised without a strong foundation. By the time the last of the resident families vacated their flats on Thursday, the building had already been titled sideways.

Six years ago the National Green Tribunal had put a cap on building height in Shimla at three stories keeping in view the dangers of collapse. But there are still buildings with five to 12 storeys in the town, which is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. The town has already exceeded its carrying capacity.

Nashik’s Kumbh Mela to Feature High-Tech 4,000-Camera Security Network

Published

An advanced Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will monitor the 2027 religious mega-event using artificial intelligence to ensure pilgrim safety.

The Cameras

As millions prepare to gather for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, authorities in Nashik are rolling out an unprecedented security initiative to keep the sprawling crowds safe. At the core of this effort is a massive deployment of over 4,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, all feeding live data into a single, centralized command centre.

The sheer scale of the Kumbh Mela, expected to attract upwards of 12 crore devotees, necessitates moving beyond traditional policing. The Nashik Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) is executing this high-tech surveillance network, carefully placing cameras across Nashik City, Trimbakeshwar, and vital rural parking hubs. Crucially, the system incorporates artificial intelligence designed to detect overcrowded zones in real-time, predict traffic flow, and spot potential safety hazards before they escalate.

This means that during peak days such as the massive Amrit Snan gatherings authorities stationed at the single command hub can instantly redirect crowds, deploy emergency medical teams, or ease traffic congestion based on live data. The camera network is further supported by 18 surveillance drones and an integrated public address system to communicate directly with pilgrims.

By treating the Kumbh Mela not just as a religious gathering but as a massive logistical undertaking, the new unified monitoring centre promises a safer, more organized experience, prioritizing the well-being of every devotee attending the sacred event.

CM Fadnavis Launches Statewide Crusade to Protect Students from Drug Menace

The “Campus Connect” initiative moves beyond policing, focusing on counseling, curriculum changes, and community support to build a drug-free future for Maharashtra’s youth.

The Initiative

Every morning, millions of parents in Maharashtra send their children off to school, hoping for their safety, growth, and success. Yet, the rising shadow of youth substance abuse has increasingly turned campuses into battlegrounds. Recognizing this silent crisis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has unveiled the “Campus Connect” initiative a compassionate, community-driven mission to make every educational institution across the state entirely drug-free.

Rather than relying solely on police enforcement and punitive measures, the state is now treating addiction as a societal issue that requires empathy, awareness, and education. At the heart of the campaign are over 4,000 newly established guidance and counseling committees. Comprising teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals, these support groups aim to identify and gently guide vulnerable students before they fall deep into the trap of addiction.

To solidify this commitment, Fadnavis has personally written to school and college principals statewide, urging administrators to take active ownership of their students’ well-being. Across Maharashtra, students and educators are already taking collective pledges to look out for one another and report drug-related activities. Furthermore, the government is integrating mandatory de-addiction lessons into the school curriculum, ensuring children understand the dangers early on. For those already struggling, the initiative offers a lifeline. Partnering with local bodies like the Navi Mumbai Police, the state is expanding rehabilitation centers to provide specialized psychiatric counseling and medical care.

Ultimately, the “Campus Connect” drive is more than just a government mandate; it is a promise to families that Maharashtra’s schools will remain safe havens for learning, not spaces of despair.
