NAVI MUMBAI: Doctors of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation have successfully operated on two patients infected with mucormycosis at Vashi. This achievement has boosted the self-confidence of the municipal doctors to fight the black fungus disease as well as the COVID-19.

Superintendent of the NMMC first referral unit, Dr. Prashant Jawade, said: “Both the operations on a 73-year-old man and a 49-year-old male were highly challenging. However, our team of surgeons and ENT doctors has done a commendable feat by curing both of these patients. Each operation lasted over three hours as the medical team had to carefully remove all the infected tissues around the skull region.”

“The operation of the 73-year-old patient was more difficult as he was already blind in one eye, had multiple co-morbidities, and a cardiac history which included stents in his heart. The doctors had to be extra careful not to damage the functioning eye of the old patient so as to prevent full blindness. All team members, including the nurses, stayed highly focused throughout the surgeries, for which they deserve our kudos.” Dr. Jawade added.

Dr. Yogesh Narkhade, Dr. Vinita Salimkar, Dr. Nikita Budiwant, Dr. Meghna Jadhav, Dr. Sonal Patil, Dr. Nagesh Sakolkar, Dr. Vaishali Patil, sister Nanda, sister Mansi, sister Shweta, Marchande, and Tejas are the names of the municipal medical staff who were involved in the operation.

The former head of the NMMC health committee appreciated the good work of the civic staff and said: “The intricate operations done by our municipal doctors show that we can tackle serious infections too. So far, there are 25 mucormycosis cases in our city, and all patients are being cared for in government and private hospitals.” said, Raju Shinde, the former head of the NMMC health committee. He also appreciated the excellent work of the civic medical staff.
