The Concerns

With the monsoon season coming to an end, concerns over dengue and malaria are growing in Navi Mumbai. However, updated figures on the number of cases have not been made public by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), raising questions among residents.

According to the available data, between January 1 and August 20, NMMC recorded 23 malaria cases and 194 suspected dengue cases. Since then, residents have continued reporting fever, body pain and weakness, while mosquito activity remains a concern in several areas. The civic body has said that preventive measures are being carried out, including fogging, removal of stagnant water and house-to-house surveys around areas where cases are detected. NMMC also conducted 60 awareness camps, which were attended by more than 20,000 residents.

However, residents and local observers are seeking updated information on the number of people tested, confirmed cases and areas reporting higher infections. The lack of recent figures has added to concerns about the actual situation on the ground. The issue gained further attention after a patient reportedly diagnosed with dengue and falciparum malaria died during treatment in September.

As mosquito-borne diseases remain a seasonal concern, residents are urging the civic administration to share updated data regularly and strengthen preventive measures to ensure timely action.

Electoral roll revision identifies missing, shifted, deceased and duplicate voter records in Navi Mumbai.

The Removal

Nearly 3.85 lakh names have been removed from the electoral rolls of the Airoli and Belapur Assembly constituencies as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter records. According to the data, 2,19,002 names were removed from Airoli, while 1,65,258 names were deleted from Belapur. The revision involved verification of voter details, including checking records through field visits and digital mapping.

Officials said the deleted names largely belong to voters who were found to be absent, had shifted from their registered addresses, were deceased or had duplicate registrations. Such records have been placed under the ASDD category.

The exercise also identified a significant number of duplicate entries. Airoli recorded 1,02,682 duplicate names, while Belapur had 83,742. Notices have been issued in cases requiring further verification. However, the deletion does not necessarily mean that all the names are permanently removed. Voters and political parties can submit claims and objections with the required documents. Electoral officials will examine these applications before taking a final decision.

Officials have also pointed to Navi Mumbai’s large migrant and tenant population as one of the reasons for outdated or duplicate voter records. The revision is aimed at keeping the electoral rolls updated and ensuring that voter information accurately reflects people living in the two constituencies.

‘Sugandhi Shahar Abhiyan’ encourages citizens to take responsibility for cleanliness around their homes and workplaces.

The Launch

The Navi Mumbai civic administration has launched the ‘Sugandhi Shahar Abhiyan Angan Dattak Yojana 2026’, an initiative aimed at encouraging citizens to take greater responsibility for keeping public spaces clean and attractive.

The campaign was launched at Vishnudas Bhave Natyagruha in Vashi in the presence of Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, civic representatives and around 1,200 citizens. Under the initiative, residents, housing societies, institutions and organisations can voluntarily adopt small public spaces measuring around 10 to 15 feet near their homes or establishments. Participants will be encouraged to keep these areas clean, well-maintained, safe and environmentally friendly.

More than 100 citizens have already come forward to participate in the initiative. Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat said the campaign focuses on three elements the building, the surrounding space and the individual with the aim of making cleanliness a shared responsibility. The initiative comes after Navi Mumbai recorded strong performance in the Swachh Survekshan, securing first place in Maharashtra and third place nationally, according to the civic administration.

Officials said public participation will be important in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and improving neighbourhood spaces. Citizens interested in adopting a public space can register through the campaign’s website. The initiative also seeks participation from people who live outside Navi Mumbai but have a connection with the city.
