Rs 16.16 Lakh Cash Seized From Mercedes at APMC Check Post Ahead of NMMC Polls
Amid strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections, election surveillance teams seized Rs 16.16 lakh in unaccounted cash from a Mercedes car at a check post near the APMC Market in Vashi.
The seizure was made on January 9 during a routine inspection at the APMC check post near Arenja Circle. Officials said the vehicle was stopped as part of intensified monitoring to curb the illegal movement of cash and other inducements during the election period. During the inspection, authorities recovered a large sum of cash from the vehicle. The driver reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the money or its intended use, following which the amount was confiscated.
Election officials said the action was taken under the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct, which came into force with the announcement of the civic polls. Legal procedures have been initiated, and further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the cash was linked to any election-related activity.
To ensure free and fair elections, the NMMC election machinery has deployed 27 Static Surveillance Teams across Navi Mumbai. These teams are stationed at strategic locations, including major entry and exit points, busy junctions and sensitive areas, to monitor the movement of cash, liquor and other prohibited items.
Officials said surveillance has been intensified across the city and warned that strict action will be taken against any violations of election norms. The administration has appealed to political parties and candidates to adhere to the Model Code of Conduct, stressing that such enforcement measures are crucial to maintaining transparency and public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2026 civic elections.
