Major Milestone Achieved in CIDCO’s Water Supply Project for Navi Mumbai Suburbs

Published

on

An important milestone was achieved on Monday in the ambitious Hetawane water supply project, aimed at addressing the growing drinking water needs of CIDCO-developed suburbs in Navi Mumbai. The breakthrough of a crucial underground water tunnel marks a significant engineering success for the project.

The milestone was reached when the treated water tunnel successfully connected to the water treatment plant at Wahal village. This tunnel forms a key part of the extensive pipeline system designed to bring water from the Hetawane Dam to Navi Mumbai, Panvel and Uran regions. It is the first time CIDCO has undertaken such a large-scale underground water tunnel project.

The work is being executed under Package-1, which includes an 8.7-kilometre-long treated water tunnel. So far, over 5.5 kilometres of tunnelling has been completed by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. Engineers faced challenging geological conditions, boring through hard basalt rock at depths of nearly 100 metres below ground level.

Once fully completed, the Hetawane project will significantly enhance CIDCO’s water supply capacity, increasing it from the current 120 million litres per day (MLD) to 270 MLD. This expansion is expected to provide long-term relief to rapidly urbanising nodes and support future population growth.

CIDCO officials described the breakthrough as a historic achievement and expressed confidence that the project will ensure reliable and sustainable drinking water supply to suburban Navi Mumbai in the coming years. The successful tunnel breakthrough was celebrated at the site, highlighting the importance of the moment for the region’s infrastructure development.

The Repairs

With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to make city roads safer and smoother for residents and devotees.
