NMMC Sets Up 143 Artificial Ponds for Eco-Friendly, Plastic-Free Ganeshotsav 2025

To guarantee a plastic-free and environmentally responsible Ganeshotsav 2025 in Navi Mumbai, NMMC installs 143 artificial ponds.

The Ponds

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has created 143 artificial immersion ponds across the city to promote an eco-friendly and plastic-free Ganeshotsav 2025.

As per court and state government directives, Ganesh idols up to six feet must be immersed only in artificial ponds, not in natural water bodies. To support this, NMMC has set up temporary ponds in every ward to make the process more convenient for residents.

The civic body has also appealed to devotees and public mandals to adopt sustainable practices. Idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) cause severe water pollution, so citizens are encouraged to use clay (shadu) idols instead. Similarly, NMMC has urged people to avoid decorations made from plastic and thermocol, suggesting reusable options such as cloth and paper.

To ensure smooth and safe immersions, the corporation has arranged lifeguards, fire brigade units, CCTV surveillance, health facilities, sanitation, drinking water, boats, forklifts, and nirmalya (floral offering) collection services at all artificial and traditional immersion sites. Police personnel and volunteers will also be deployed to manage crowds and maintain order.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde said that Navi Mumbai has always been recognized as an environmentally conscious city, and this initiative is another step towards protecting the environment while upholding traditions. “Eco-friendly celebrations not only safeguard our natural resources but also set an example for future generations,” he added.

With these measures, NMMC aims to ensure a safe, sustainable, and joyous Ganeshotsav for all citizens.

Senior leader demands action against corrupt officials and halts suspicious building demolitions in Sector 9.

The Redevelopment

Raising a stern alarm over reckless urban expansion, State Minister Ganesh Naik has ordered a crackdown on questionable redevelopment projects across Navi Mumbai, taking a strong stand to protect the planned character of the satellite city.

Focusing on two controversial redevelopment sites in Vashi Sector 9 the Naivedya and Albela buildings Naik directed municipal officials to immediately halt suspicious demolitions, revoke dubious commencement certificates (CCs), and initiate strict action against civic personnel involved in illegal approvals.

Addressing citizens at a recently held Janata Darbar, Naik voiced deep concern over the misuse of cluster redevelopment schemes and Floor Space Index (FSI) regulations, warning that unchecked high-rise construction without matching infrastructure will overwhelm roads, water supply, and parking facilities.

“If increased FSI is granted to every building without planning proper roads, parking, and water supply, Navi Mumbai will become completely unliveable,” Naik asserted, urging an immediate audit of civic approvals. Ganesh Naik’s firm stance underlines a growing effort to hold civic authorities accountable and ensure that urban renewal respects public safety, transparency, and the long-term wellbeing of residents.
