Fertilizer Shortage in Uran Worries Farmers Amid Kharif Season

Published

on

Farmers in Uran taluka are grappling with a severe shortage of fertilizers during the crucial Kharif season, raising fears of potential crop losses. Both chemical and mixed fertilizers are in short supply, making it difficult for cultivators to nourish paddy seedlings.

The rice transplantation process, already delayed by early monsoon floods in May, has suffered further setbacks. While many farmers managed to replant in muddy fields, the unavailability of sufficient fertilizers has left much of the sowing incomplete.

According to Agriculture Department officials, including officer S. G. Gatkal, the region recently received only 25 tonnes of fertilizer from Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF)—a quantity far below the actual demand. To ease the crisis, officials have instructed fertilizer sellers to distribute stock from buffer reserves while waiting for additional supplies.

Currently, each farmer is being given only two bags of fertilizer, which quickly run out. The resulting delays have hampered timely nutrient application, affected crop growth and added to the anxiety among farmers.

“The supply is too low to meet our needs,” said a local farmer. “We’re worried about the impact on yield this season.”

The shortage comes at a critical time for the Kharif crop cycle, prompting urgent calls for better supply chain management and quicker intervention by the authorities.

‘Sugandhi Shahar Abhiyan’ encourages citizens to take responsibility for cleanliness around their homes and workplaces.

The Launch

The Navi Mumbai civic administration has launched the ‘Sugandhi Shahar Abhiyan Angan Dattak Yojana 2026’, an initiative aimed at encouraging citizens to take greater responsibility for keeping public spaces clean and attractive.

The campaign was launched at Vishnudas Bhave Natyagruha in Vashi in the presence of Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, civic representatives and around 1,200 citizens. Under the initiative, residents, housing societies, institutions and organisations can voluntarily adopt small public spaces measuring around 10 to 15 feet near their homes or establishments. Participants will be encouraged to keep these areas clean, well-maintained, safe and environmentally friendly.

More than 100 citizens have already come forward to participate in the initiative. Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat said the campaign focuses on three elements the building, the surrounding space and the individual with the aim of making cleanliness a shared responsibility. The initiative comes after Navi Mumbai recorded strong performance in the Swachh Survekshan, securing first place in Maharashtra and third place nationally, according to the civic administration.

Officials said public participation will be important in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and improving neighbourhood spaces. Citizens interested in adopting a public space can register through the campaign’s website. The initiative also seeks participation from people who live outside Navi Mumbai but have a connection with the city.
