Cyber Fraudster Dupes Rabale MIDC Firm of ₹22 Lakh by Impersonating MD

A cybercriminal posing as the Managing Director of a Rabale MIDC-based company cheated an accountant out of Rs 22 lakh through a WhatsApp scam. The Rabale MIDC police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act and launched a probe.

The victim, Nagesh Rarchla, head of the accounts department at MD Trans Con Pvt. Ltd., received WhatsApp messages from an unknown number on July 9. The sender claimed to be MD Milind Deshmukh, stating that he had changed his number. Since the profile photo matched Deshmukh’s, Rarchla believed the claim and saved the number.

Earlier, on July 8, Deshmukh had visited a phone service center in Thane to transfer data from his old phone to a new one and had asked Rarchla to transfer Rs 3,799 to the center, which he did—making the impersonation more convincing.

On July 10, the fraudster contacted Rarchla again, instructing him to urgently transfer Rs 22 lakh for a company-related transaction. Despite advice from another company director, Udaysingh Deshmukh, to wait, the fraudster’s repeated messages pressured Rarchla into transferring the full amount.

The fraud came to light when the real MD denied sending any such messages or using a new number. Realizing he had been duped, Rarchla filed a complaint.

Rabale MIDC police are now investigating the case to trace the accused and recover the defrauded amount.
