The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has cancelled invitations extended to newly elected corporators for Republic Day flag-hoisting ceremonies in civic schools this year, citing administrative and procedural delays.

Although the municipal elections have concluded, the first general body meeting of the newly elected corporators is yet to take place. In view of this, the NMMC education department has issued revised instructions for the January 26 celebrations across all municipal schools. As per the new directive, school principals will themselves conduct the flag-hoisting ceremonies, and corporators will not be invited to preside over the events.

Officials clarified that any earlier circulars or communications instructing schools to invite corporators should be treated as cancelled. In cases where invitation letters have already been sent, school principals have been directed to inform the concerned corporators about the revised decision and explain the administrative reasons behind the change.

The move has been described as a temporary arrangement until formal procedures related to the newly elected body are completed. The education department has emphasized that the decision is purely administrative and not political in nature.

Despite the change, the NMMC has instructed all schools to ensure that Republic Day celebrations are conducted with full enthusiasm, discipline and respect for national values. Principals have been asked to strictly adhere to the guidelines and ensure smooth conduct of the programme.

The decision has drawn attention as it comes soon after the municipal elections, highlighting the impact of procedural delays on official civic events.

The Bombay High Court has ordered the withholding of the salary of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner after expressing strong dissatisfaction over the civic body’s failure to effectively control rising air pollution levels.

The direction was issued during a hearing on worsening air quality across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The court observed that despite repeated instructions, the NMMC had failed to submit a satisfactory compliance report detailing inspections and concrete steps taken to curb air pollution, particularly at construction sites and major pollution hotspots.

The division bench noted that senior civic officials appeared to be treating the issue casually and questioned how the commissioner could continue to draw salary without demonstrating personal accountability and sincere efforts to address the problem. As a result, the court ordered that the commissioner’s salary be stopped until further notice.

The High Court also issued a stern warning to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), stating that similar action could be taken against the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner if adequate pollution-control measures are not implemented promptly. The bench emphasized that air pollution poses a serious threat to public health and cannot be ignored by civic authorities.

The court has directed both municipal corporations to submit detailed reports outlining enforcement actions, inspections, penalties imposed on violators and future plans to improve air quality. The matter will be reviewed in the next hearing.

Environmental activists have welcomed the court’s firm stand, calling it a strong message on accountability in tackling chronic air pollution in urban areas.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has significantly expanded its digital governance initiative by making 117 civic services available online, allowing residents to access essential municipal facilities with a single click.

Earlier, 68 services were already available on the digital platform. With the addition of 49 more services, the corporation aims to reduce the need for citizens to visit municipal offices and to ensure faster, more transparent service delivery. The services can be accessed through the NMMC’s official website as well as the ‘My NMMC’ mobile application.

Among the key facilities now available online are applications for birth and death certificates, which are processed within three days of submission. Hospitals have been instructed to upload birth and death registration details digitally, enabling quicker verification and reducing paperwork. Citizens can also upload required documents online, further simplifying the process.

Civic officials stated that the digital expansion is part of the corporation’s broader plan to strengthen e-governance and improve citizen convenience. By integrating multiple departments onto a single digital platform, the NMMC aims to enhance efficiency, accountability and transparency in municipal operations.

The online system also helps in tracking applications, reducing delays and improving communication between citizens and civic departments. Officials have urged residents to make full use of the digital facilities to save time and avoid unnecessary visits to municipal offices.

The NMMC continues to upgrade its digital infrastructure and plans to further expand online services in the coming months as part of its smart governance initiatives.
